چکیده

Optimizations in the petascale era require modifications of existing codes to take advantage of new architectures with large core counts and SIMD vector units. This paper examines high-level and low-level optimization strategies for numerical weather prediction (NWP) codes. These strategies employ thread-local structures of arrays (SOA) and an OpenMP directive such as OMP SIMD. These optimization approaches are applied to the Weather Research Forecasting single-moment 6class microphysics schemes (WSM6) in the US Navy NEPTUNE system. The results of this study indicate that the high-level approach with SOA and low-level OMP SIMD improves thread and vector parallelism by increasing data and temporal locality. The modified version of WSM6 runs 70x faster than the original serial code. This improvement is about 23.3x faster than the performance achieved by Ouermi et al. [1], and 14.9x faster than the performance achieved by Michalakes et al. [2]

A new double moment approach for the warm-rain process based on the WSM6 scheme (WDM6)

The double-moment approach for the bulk microphysics schemes that allows more flexibility of the size distribution enabling the mean diameter to evolve in contrast to the single-moment approach has become one of the promising methods to improve microphysical processes in the mesoscale modeling area. Cohard and Pinty (2000b) showed the superiority of a double-moment approach in two-dimensional e...

Sensitivity study of cloud-resolving convective simulations with WRF using the PLIN and WSM6 microphysical parameterizations

At NCAR, real time forecasting experiments with a 4-km grid mesh over the central US employed the WRF-Single-Moment 6class (WSM6) Microphysics scheme that replaced the Purdue Lin (PLIN) scheme in early 2005. Both schemes have the same number of prognostic water substance including graupel. Although some preliminary reports identified the overall superiority of the WSM6 to the PLIN scheme in res...

Impacts of a-priori databases using six WRF microphysics schemes on passive microwave rainfall retrievals

Physically based rainfall retrievals from passive microwave sensors often make use of cloud-resolving models (CRMs) to build a priori databases of potential rain structures. EachCRM, however, has its own cloud microphysics assumptions. Hence, approximated microphysics may cause uncertainties in the a priori information resulting in inaccurate rainfall estimates. This study first builds a priori...
